Bayan Knights founder Gilbert Monsanto finally speaks...

"A few weeks ago, a meeting was held with an unexpected outcome. Each voice was heard. I agreed on most of them. Some of the efforts we’ve done so far are not enough. Some tasks are not moving forward while some members are left feeling useless. Something had to be done. With members upwards of five dozen unique and talented Pinoys, one book was just not enough. And they’re asking for something better for their original characters.

So a choice had to be made. A new direction had to be created. Not an easy task–and something some people might think is as nuts as our original goal. “WE ARE ONE” represented what Bayan Knights was all about. A family of heroic ideals… focused on how to support one another for the komiks industry’s common good.

We’re beyond that now. We are no longer one. Separately, we’ll grow and that is what we’ve decided that day: To grow apart. We are one no more. There will be changes and if you want to know what really happened… click the link below.

BK Cosplayer wins at the MetroCon

We can't thank Heloise "Kent" Diamante enough for wanting to cosplay as Audrey De Leon's Takip-Silim. She made us doubly proud by winning as the best cosplayer of a local character at the Metro Comic Con cosplay competition. Thank you so much, Kent! You were brilliant!

On 26 August 2008, the first members of the Bayan Knights "met" at the group's very first online conference. Two years later, we now have more than 50 members, four issues of our main storyline, and countless books from our roster of creators. What have the past two years been like for us? Freaking awesome!

And we have all of you to thank for making it all possible.

We celebrated our anniversary a few days early at the recently concluded MetroCon. The event was everything it promised to be and we got to meet some of you there too!

Here we have Manila Man and long-time supporter Jaybee Bonus (fourth from the left) who gifted us with way too cool Bayan Knights keychains. We really loved them, Jaybee!

About a week before the MetroCon, we were invited by the Loyola Book Club of the Ateneo de Manila High School to take part in their Linggo ng Wika activities. We had a grand time meeting the students and talking about making comics. We are very grateful to the club's moderator, Prof. Joel Falgui, for the incredible support!

As for our New OC recruitment contest, a total of nine (9) recruits made it to the deadline We're going through their "applications" as we speak and we have to say we're very impressed. You guys really gave it your all. Thank you so much!!!

Sarge btw has confirmed that it's okay for you guys to post your origin pages on your respective DA galleries. You can certainly mention that the pages were created for our contest, but we'd like to request that anyone refrain from labeling their OC as an official Bayan Knights member until the winner is announced. As stated in the contest rules, only the winner will become part of the Bayan Knights narrative.

While the entries are being reviewed, we also will not be able to post them in our main gallery. We hope you all understand :)

In behalf of all the Bayan Knights, we thank those who bought our comics, asked for autographs, took pictures with us and basically everyone who dropped by our booth to chat during the 2-day Metro Comic Con! More pictures and a proper report about the event to come soon (hopefully, hehe!..)

We'd also like to announce that our Recruitment Contest is now officially over! The 2-pagers we received were impressive and we thank those who took the time to join the fun and share their creations. New Contest: Who will next heed the call?

Will it be another hero?

Or a villain?

If you have an original character (OC) that you'd like to be part of the Bayan Knights universe, now's your chance to tell his/her story!

Submit a two-page origin story for your OC, much like the origin stories we feature at the end of each of our issues.

The OC with the best story gets "recruited" into the BK universe!*

Kindly follow the specs below for your submissions:

- Send only 150 dpi jpeg files; do not send original pages

- Standard bond-paper size is sufficient for each page, but you can always draw on 11x17 paper if that suits you better.

- Be sure to tell a single stand-alone story within exactly two pages. Sorry, but we won't be allowing exceptions.

- Your story may be in English, Filipino, or Taglish. Whatever works best!

- Tell only your OC's story. For now, it would be better if you don't include any element or character from the existing BK universe. We'd like to get to know your OC on his/her own terms

Submit your story to smp_letters@yahoo.com no later than 21 August 2010.

The winning entry (and there can be only one) will be announced during the Komikon this November.

*The character will become part of an ongoing or future BK storyline. All characters in the Bayan Knights universe remain the property of their respective creators.

Congratulations to Talim creator, Omi Remalante Jr for his international indie comics debut with MAJESTIC-XII: Top Secret/For Magic #1. He handles the coloring duties for that issue.

Gilbert Monsanto, or Sarge as we Knights fondly refer to him, finally got the chance to go online yesterday late afternoon. Worries were erased as he posted a message on his Facebook account which said...

"Thank god safe kami ng family ko, wala pa rin kuryente sa bahay at magulo pa rin sa bahay, binaha sa loob. Nasa mall using wifi just to update and finish some writing. Hope, everyone's safe."

We are happy that you and your family are safe, Sarge. Now in addition to that, he also posted a short but exciting message via Twitter

"Tinatapos ang script ng BK 3 :)"

Haha! That's how awesome the guy is! That's definitely another reason to smile. Current Batman and Robin penciller Philip Tan probably summed it up the best way when he commented about the twit and said "Bilib talaga ako sa spirit ni Gilbert!!! Talk about passion!"

Recently, our country, specifically Pasig, Makati and other parts of Metro Manila were devastated by a super typhoon called "Ondoy", flooding streets, destroying millions worth of properties, and leaving hundreds of people homeless.. Some were even unfortunate to have lost their lives..

Up to now, there is still no sign of our Bayan Knights leader, Gilbert Monsanto. He resides with his family at De Castro, Lifehomes Subdivision, Pasig. Texting and calling him at their given contact numbers seemed to be futile. Haaaay. Where are you, Sarge? We all hope and pray that you and your family are safe.

Bayan Knights: the first year

It also started with an idea, and like everything else wonderful, it all seemed like just a dream. The best thing about dreams is that it is free. Realizing that dream is another thing altogether - there will be costs, sacrifices and consequences. All things considered, we are all willing to take them. The start of this venture was easy enough. I've sent out invitations and hope that people will consider trying this idea out, without anything to lose except for their agreement to one simple task - to support, each and every Bayan Knight who will join the cause, past, present and future members.

Bayan Knights is not just the name of our comicbook. It was a title, an opportunity to be there when we really needed, right at the center of everything. A chance to touch people, to help fuel their dreams and forge them into a reality. A choice to voice out ideas and to be empowered and do something you'd only think of maybe finishing.

The initial member was 7, now we are forty plus strong. Each one dedicated to improve their craft, fueled by talented people around them. Their second family. I am
not really sure how to sum up all the things we've achieved within the year. But try, I will.

In a span of a year, we've managed to finish and publish two issues of Bayan Knights, backed with numerous independently published and owned books like BOY IPIS, KALAYAAN, SANDUGUAN, MANANABAS, GWAPOMAN, MORION and many more.

We managed to work with other studios and artists, breaching walls and boundaries. Helping each other for the sake of our local comics industry.

We've been featured in newspapers, magazines, including online reviews. We are thankful for these people for spreading the word for us.

Some of us are now working together for projects, making things easier, faster and more profitable for the members/family.

The real magic here is the undeniable truth that there is a hero in all of us. We can work together if we just do things simple and right. Frankly I was worried when I started this, thinking that putting all these people in one table could be quite a handful. A headache to beat all headaches and I feared the worst. Surprisingly, as it turned out, these fine talented individuals are just so warm funny and so easy to be with - a different kind of headache, but a headache nonetheless.

I thought I was helping them by giving them a favor with all this. Now, I find myself lucky for all their help. They are all truly a blessing to be with. We are cooking up a storm my friends, I do hope you'll be with us for another year. Thank you for the company. All I can say is, you wouldn't want to miss what we have in store for another year.

We have yet to sail countless seas with our ship, for this is just the beginning. Won't you come and join us with this voyage now? All we really needed was a little faith to blow us towards our destination, through your hearts.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How will I know if my OC was Accepted as a Bayan Knight?
If your OC has been accepted, you will receive a letter of agreement from us .

Will I get a rejection letters then?
Well, we don't really believe in rejecting people. We are a support group after all. So, we won't be sending one of those ugly letters. But keep in mind that we use a simple process of making sure that we will be using the OC if ever we accept them so it really depends on the timing and if they suit the current story line.

Is there a formula on how to become a Bayan Knight?
I think that the only real formula is to make your OC unique, interesting and well-thought of. We have to remind you that we are not going to treat your respectives OCs as an orphan, it will forever remain your creation, we are just going to put them on a stage for more people to appreciate them. You are still the creator and we expect you to come up with something special for them.

If you think at anytime you can improve your OC, since I believe that these characters are like a living person that can change for the better, be my guest. Inform us, if you need help, tell us. This way, we can do something for our creation while we wait.
